48 Chevy 3100's History

Until last year this truck had been on the same farm in Minnesota since it was brand new. When the father died the truck passed to the son. He continued using it on the farm until a few years ago. At that time he decided to make an old school hot-rod out of it.

He took it to the body shop and had decades of farm dents knocked out and primed it flat black. Any rust on the cab and bed exterior was removed. Some rust in areas that don't show, such as, corners of the firewall and floor were treated and left or covered with sheet metal or strip caulk. The wood bed, front grill and rear bumper were replaced. Because it was used as a farm truck it wasn't exposed to salty roads. Unlike most trucks of this vintage, it is not full of rust. These trucks are notorious for the lower portion of the cab corners and doors to be rusted out. This truck exterior is solid.

The engine was upgraded from a 216 cu. in. to a six year newer, 235 cu. in. and completely rebuilt. An Offenhauser twin two barrel carburetor intake manifold was installed. Charging system was converted from a 6 volt generator to a 12 volt alternator and all wiring replaced. Exhaust manifold was split for dual lake pipes exhaust. Seat reupholstered. New gauges, etc.

The man I bought the truck from had a stroke. He was forced to sell the family farm & truck. The truck driver that delivered the truck to me said that the owner literally broke down cried when the truck left.

My plan for the truck was to install power steering so that my wife drive it and use it as our second car. I also planned to add power front disc brakes and do some further custom work to it. However, shortly after buying the truck I had a serious accident and became permanently disabled and unable to work on the truck. That's why I'm selling it. I found another 1948 Chevy truck that already had power steering, disc brakes, etc. The asking price was $40,000. I negotiated a deal, and now it's in my driveway. By the way, the cab corners and doors on my new 48 Chevy are rusted through and have to be fixed. I'd love to keep both trucks but that's not practical, or so my wife says. The price I'm asking for this truck is thousands below NADA book value for a 48 Chevy truck that is in just "average" condition. If you shop around you will see that this truck is certainly above average and a great value.

This truck is so fun to drive. It draws attention everywhere it goes. It's like stepping back in time. I love it and hate to see it go but that's life.

My uncompleted projects

  • Windshield wipers (electric) were never reinstalled after body work was completed, they are still in a box.
  • The headliner is made from a cardboard type material and needs to be replaced. It's not too bad but I have a new headliner kit ready to be installed
  • Some water leaks into the cab when it rains. I have a new cowling vent gasket to install.
  • Running boards are rusted and need to be replaced.
  • The windshield wipers, new headliner, cowling vent gasket and all other parts I have will be shipped in the cab of the truck.
